⚡ FCL vs LCL — Quick Answer
🚢 Use FCL When
- Cargo exceeds 12–15 CBM
- Goods are fragile or high-value
- Shipment is time-sensitive
- Cargo is hazardous or food/pharma
- FCL = Faster & Safer
📦 Use LCL When
- Cargo is under 10–12 CBM
- Sending samples or trial orders
- Irregular shipping schedule
- General merchandise or SME exports
- LCL = Cheaper for small cargo
When it comes to sea freight, one of the most important decisions you will make is whether to ship FCL (Full Container Load) or LCL (Less than Container Load). Get this decision right and you can save hundreds or even thousands of dollars per shipment. Get it wrong and you either pay for empty container space or pay premium LCL rates on a volume that would have been cheaper in its own container.
This guide explains exactly what FCL and LCL are, when to use each, how the costs compare at different cargo volumes, and which option is right for your specific shipment. Our team at TTI Shipping & Logistics in New Delhi advises importers and exporters on FCL vs LCL daily — WhatsApp us right now for a recommendation on your specific cargo.

1 What is FCL — Full Container Load?
FCL stands for Full Container Load. When you book an FCL shipment, you are booking an entire shipping container exclusively for your cargo. No other shipper’s goods share your container — the entire 20ft or 40ft box is yours from origin to destination.
FCL does not mean you have to physically fill the entire container. It simply means you have booked it exclusively. You could ship just 5 CBM in a 20ft container and still call it FCL — though economically it only makes sense once your cargo reaches a reasonable volume (typically 12 CBM or more for a 20ft, or 22 CBM or more for a 40ft).
20ft Container (TEU)
Internal volume approx. 33 CBM. Max payload approx. 28,000 kg. Fits approximately 10–11 standard pallets. Most common container size for Indian importers and exporters. Ideal for shipments of 12–28 CBM.
40ft Container (FEU)
Internal volume approx. 67 CBM. Max payload approx. 26,500 kg. Fits approximately 20–22 standard pallets. Best value per CBM for large shipments. Ideal for shipments of 22–60 CBM.
40ft High Cube (HC)
Internal volume approx. 76 CBM. Extra height of 2.7m vs standard 2.4m. Fits approximately 20–24 standard pallets. Popular for lightweight, voluminous cargo such as garments, furniture and household goods.
Special Containers
Reefer (refrigerated), Open Top, Flat Rack, and Tank containers available for specific cargo types including perishables, oversized machinery and bulk liquids.
2 What is LCL — Less than Container Load?
LCL stands for Less than Container Load. When you book LCL, your cargo shares a container with shipments from other companies. A freight forwarder consolidates multiple small shipments into one container at origin, ships it to the destination port, and then deconsolidates — separating each shipper’s cargo for individual delivery.
With LCL, you only pay for the space your cargo actually occupies, charged per CBM (cubic metre) or per tonne — whichever measurement gives the higher chargeable weight. This makes LCL extremely cost-effective for small and medium-sized shipments where booking a full container would be wasteful and expensive.
How LCL is Charged: LCL rates are quoted per CBM (cubic metre) or per 1,000 kg — whichever is greater. For example, if your cargo measures 2 CBM but weighs 2,500 kg, you pay for 2.5 CBM (since 2,500 kg ÷ 1,000 = 2.5). This is called the chargeable weight or revenue tonnes. Always calculate both volume and weight before comparing LCL quotes.
⚠ The Hidden Cost Trap — Destination Terminal Handling Charges (DTHC)
Many importers choose LCL because the origin freight rate looks cheap — but are shocked when the bill arrives at the destination. At major Western ports like Felixstowe (UK), Long Beach (USA) and Port Botany (Australia), Destination Terminal Handling Charges (DTHC) — including deconsolidation fees, CFS handling and port service charges — can add USD 300 to 600+ on top of the ocean freight. Always ask your freight forwarder for the all-in landed cost, not just the origin rate, before committing to LCL.
3 FCL vs LCL — Key Differences at a Glance
Here is a direct side-by-side comparison of FCL and LCL across the most important factors:
| Factor | FCL | LCL |
|---|---|---|
| Container | Entire container exclusively yours | Shared with other shippers’ cargo |
| Minimum Volume | No minimum — economical from ~12 CBM | From 0.1 CBM — any small shipment |
| Pricing | Fixed rate per container (20ft or 40ft) | Rate per CBM or per tonne |
| Transit Time | Faster — no consolidation delays | Slower — add 3–7 days for consolidation |
| Cargo Security | Higher — no co-mingling with other cargo | Lower — cargo handled multiple times |
| Damage Risk | Lower — sealed from origin to destination | Higher — loaded and unloaded at CFS |
| Best For | Large volumes, heavy or fragile cargo | Small shipments, samples, starter orders |
| Cost at Low Volume | Expensive — you pay for empty space | Cost-effective — pay only for space used |
| Cost at High Volume | Very cost-effective per CBM | Expensive — FCL becomes cheaper above break-even |
| Suitable for Hazmat | Yes, with proper declaration | Limited — many consolidators refuse hazmat |
4 FCL vs LCL Cost Comparison — When Does FCL Become Cheaper?
The most common question shippers ask is: at what volume does FCL become cheaper than LCL? The answer depends on the trade lane, but here is a practical guide based on typical India import/export rates in 2026:
| Cargo Volume | LCL Cost (est.) | FCL 20ft Cost (est.) | Better Option |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 CBM | USD 80 – 180 | USD 1,200 – 2,800 | LCL |
| 3 CBM | USD 240 – 540 | USD 1,200 – 2,800 | LCL |
| 6 CBM | USD 480 – 1,080 | USD 1,200 – 2,800 | LCL |
| 10 CBM | USD 800 – 1,800 | USD 1,200 – 2,800 | Compare Both |
| 14 CBM | USD 1,120 – 2,520 | USD 1,200 – 2,800 | FCL Break-Even |
| 20 CBM+ | USD 1,600 – 3,600+ | USD 1,200 – 2,800 | FCL Clearly Better |
The FCL Break-Even Rule: As a general rule of thumb, once your cargo exceeds 12 to 15 CBM, FCL in a 20ft container typically becomes more cost-effective than LCL — even if you are not filling the container completely. Always get quotes for both and compare before booking. TTI Shipping provides FCL and LCL quotes side by side so you can make an informed decision.
