Export Customs Clearance — Origin Country

All export documentation is prepared and filed — Bill of Lading or Airway Bill, Commercial Invoice, Packing List, Certificate of Origin where required, and any product-specific export licences. We also verify your IEC (Importer Exporter Code) and AD Code registration before the vessel departs — preventing port delays at the Indian end before your cargo even sails. Export clearance is completed before the vessel or aircraft departs. You receive copies of all documents by email.

IEC and AD Code verified before departure
06
Ocean or Air Transit

Your cargo is in transit. Sea freight to India takes 6 to 20 days depending on origin and destination port. Air freight takes 2 to 3 days. During transit — you receive a vessel departure update, a mid-transit position update and an arrival notification when the vessel reaches Indian waters. Three touchpoints. No silence.

India Customs Clearance

TTI works with experienced licensed Customs House Agents at all major Indian ports — JNPT Mumbai, Mundra Gujarat, Chennai, Kochi, Kolkata and ICD Tughlakabad Delhi. The Bill of Entry is filed before vessel arrival. For regulated goods — electronics, toys, chemicals — BIS certification requirements are checked and advised before shipment to avoid delays at port. Duty payment, examination if required, and Out-of-Charge order are all managed by our CHA on your behalf.

How Much Does Shipping
to India Cost?

Shipping costs to India depend on five key factors. Understanding these before requesting a quote helps you get a more accurate all-in price and avoid surprises.

① Cargo Volume & Weight

LCL sea freight is charged per CBM or per tonne — whichever is greater. FCL is a flat rate for the entire container regardless of weight. Air freight is charged on gross or volumetric weight — whichever is higher.

② Origin Country & Port

Freight rates vary significantly by origin. Singapore and UAE to India are lower cost routes. USA, Canada and UK to India are higher due to longer distance and fewer direct sailings.

③ Destination Port in India

JNPT Mumbai and Mundra are the most commonly used ports. Chennai is fastest from Southeast Asia. Each port has different DTHC charges and inland delivery costs to your final destination city.

④ LCL vs FCL Container

Below 12 to 14 CBM — LCL is more cost-effective. Above 14 CBM — FCL in a 20ft container typically becomes cheaper per CBM. See our FCL vs LCL complete guide for a full cost comparison.

⑤ Commodity Type

Hazardous goods, temperature-sensitive cargo and oversized items attract surcharges. Regulated goods — electronics, pharmaceuticals, food products — may require BIS or FSSAI licences which affect overall landed cost.

⑥ Air vs Sea Freight

Air freight costs approximately USD 3.50 to 6.00 per kg. Sea freight LCL costs approximately USD 60 to 120 per CBM. For the full cost and use-case comparison — read our air vs sea freight guide.

Important: Always ask for an all-in quote — not just the ocean freight rate. Destination Terminal Handling Charges (DTHC) at Indian ports can add USD 200 to 500 on top of the freight rate. TTI quotes are always all-in with no hidden charges.

TTI in Action — Three Real Scenarios

How TTI handles shipments for businesses shipping to India from around the world

🇸🇬
Singapore → Delhi

An electronics manufacturer in Singapore needs 2 CBM of components shipped to a factory in Noida, Delhi. TTI arranges LCL sea freight from Singapore PSA to JNPT Mumbai — transit 8 to 12 days — customs clearance at Nhava Sheva and truck delivery to Noida. All-in quote delivered in 45 minutes. Door to door in 18 days total.

🇦🇪
UAE → Mumbai

A furniture company in Dubai needs a full 40ft container of home décor shipped to a warehouse in Mumbai. TTI arranges FCL from Jebel Ali to JNPT — transit 8 to 10 days — marine cargo insurance included — customs clearance at Nhava Sheva with licensed CHA — delivery to the Mumbai warehouse. Single invoice. Zero surprises.

🇩🇪
Germany → Bangalore

A German machinery manufacturer needs urgent precision equipment shipped to a client in Bangalore. Air freight from Frankfurt to Bangalore airport — transit 3 days — import customs clearance at Kempegowda International Airport — final delivery to the client's facility. Blog FAQs

How long does India customs clearance take?

For air freight at Delhi IGI or Bangalore — customs clearance typically takes 24 to 48 hours. For sea freight at JNPT Mumbai or Mundra — the average is 3 to 4 working days. Delays usually occur when the Bill of Entry is filed late. TTI files prior to vessel arrival to keep cargo moving the moment it reaches the dock.

The two biggest surprises for new shippers are DTHC — Destination Terminal Handling Charges — and Detention and Demurrage fees. Many forwarders exclude these to make their initial quote appear lower. TTI provides all-in quotes that include terminal fees upfront — the price quoted is the price paid. No post-booking surprises.

At minimum — Commercial Invoice, Packing List and Bill of Lading or Airway Bill. Depending on your commodity — you may also need a Certificate of Origin, BIS Certification or FSSAI licence. Share your HSN code with TTI and we will confirm exactly which documents your specific cargo requires before you ship.

Yes — an IEC (Importer Exporter Code) is a 10-digit number issued by India's Directorate General of Foreign Trade and is mandatory for all commercial imports. Customs clearance cannot proceed without a valid IEC. If your Indian consignee does not have one — TTI can advise on the registration process before your shipment departs.

TTI provides proactive updates at six milestones — Booking Confirmation, Vessel Departure, Mid-Transit Position, Port Arrival, Customs Out-of-Charge and Final Delivery. All updates are pushed to you via WhatsApp. You never need to chase a tracking page or call to find out where your cargo is.

Sea freight to India takes 6 to 26 days depending on origin and is significantly cheaper — LCL from approximately USD 60 per CBM. Air freight takes 2 to 4 days and costs approximately USD 3.50 to 6.00 per kg. Sea freight suits bulk and non-urgent cargo. Air freight suits urgent, high-value or perishable shipments.

The right Indian port depends on your final delivery destination. JNPT Mumbai and Mundra serve West and North India. Chennai serves South and East India. Kochi serves Kerala and Southwest India. Kolkata serves East India and the Northeast. TTI recommends the most cost-effective port based on your delivery address and cargo type.

Yes. TTI handles complete door to door shipments — pickup from your address in the origin country, export customs clearance, ocean or air freight, import customs clearance at the Indian port or airport, and inland delivery to your final destination anywhere in India. One company, one contact, one all-in invoice for the entire journey.

BIS — Bureau of Indian Standards — certification is mandatory for certain product categories imported into India including electronics, toys, electrical appliances, chemicals and some food contact materials. Importing these without valid BIS certification results in port detention. TTI checks BIS requirements for your specific commodity before your shipment departs the origin country.
